OliVR Workshop Activity in Athens
The Workshop activity of the OliVR successfully completed in Nafplia and Athens, Greece.
12-14 October 2026
Athens, Greece

The workshop activities in Athens and Nafplio were successfully completed. Information was shared about the olive sectors in Türkiye, Spain, and Greece, and the challenges facing these sectors were discussed.
In addition, the current progress of the software developed for pruning olive trees in a virtual reality (VR) environment was presented.
On Tuesday, a field visit was organized, during which pruning techniques for Koroneiki olive trees were demonstrated. Husqvarna's pruning equipment was also introduced and demonstrated in the olive grove.
One of the topics covered in the workshop was the pruning of olive trees, with a specific focus on the Koroneiki variety.
To help determine which branches should be removed during pruning, the "4D" rule—a simple, practical guide—was introduced:
Dead: Branches that have dried out.
Diseased: Branches showing signs of disease.
Dysfunctional: Branches that do not contribute to the tree's structure or productivity.
Damaged: Branches that have sustained physical injury. This approach provides a practical framework for an initial assessment of the tree canopy and for improving the tree's overall health. The goal is to manage the foliage rationally, avoiding unnecessary interventions.
However, the effectiveness of pruning varies depending on several factors, including the age of the tree, its variety, the training system employed, soil and climatic conditions, and the specific production objectives for the olive grove.
Date: The Workshop Activity was held between 12.10.2026 - 14.10.2026
